A place to explore the advantages, disadvantages and social systems that are often unspoken and unseen around privilege.
WILPF MEETING: White Privilege, an exploration with SURJ
In 1989, Peggy McIntosh's article "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack" was published in WILPF's magazine, Peace and Freedom.
Tonight, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) members Deb and Kim will introduce us to the topic with activities adapted from Peggy McIntosh's work.
This introduction to the issue will help us identify examples of white privilege, see how we personally have benefited, increase our capacity to engage with others on the issue, and have ideas about what to do next.
This meeting isn't as much a presentation as an exercise, as Peggy writes, "to work on myself at least by identifying some of the daily effects of white privilege in my life."
We'll work together in a spirit of support and good will, as a place to start our work on racism in our culture and in ourselves.
