Spring Street Destination Nowhere – Tuesday July 20, 11:30 am

At 11:30 AM on Tuesday, July 20, unhoused residents and community supporters will gather at Columbus Park in San Jose to protest the City’s lack of a plan to house its residents who can no longer afford the skyrocketing rents in Silicon Valley. At 12 noon, they will march and car caravan down Taylor Street to Coleman, down Coleman to Hedding, down Hedding to Spring Street, and down Spring Street back to Columbus Park.

Unhoused people are protesting the City’s plan to respond to pressure from the Federal Aviation Authority by sweeping their encampment at Spring Street, but with no alternate location for them to go to. According to San Jose’s Housing Department, every time local officials and non-profits house one unhoused family, two or three other families become unhoused for the first time. City and County officials claim they have a community plan to end homelessness, but it is clear that homelessness is increasing, not ending. The Spring Street encampment is the largest one in San Jose since the City destroyed the “Jungle” in 2014, and may be the largest in the County.

After the march, residents will gather near Columbus Park for a rally to demand no sweeps at Spring Street without an alternate place to move to. Unhoused residents have been demanding a safe place to sleep in San Jose for decades, but elected officials have been too busy pleasing tech companies and real estate developers to be able to solve the simple problem of finding a safe place to sleep at night for their people. In the richest country in the world, every human being deserves to have a home, and when homes are not immediately available, a safe and legal place where they can live in the meantime. No one deserves the brutality of being swept repeatedly from camp to camp with no place to go.
