The Urgent Need for Peace

Banner with anti-war message, sign saying Honk for Peace

On TV news as well as in print and social media, we are seeing coverage of the death and destruction resulting from Russia’s war on Ukraine. These images are horrifying and we condemn the Russian invasion. At the same time we note the provocative role that our own country played in the years leading up to this moment. And we recognize that the U.S. has no right to take the high moral ground while continuing to wage “forever wars” in so many countries.

For the past 20 years, a small group of people have spent one hour a week as a public presence for peace in downtown San Jose. The Friday Peace Vigil began in 2001 to oppose the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. Since we returned to the corner of 4th and San Fernando after a few months of lockdown, our signs have condemned the unending wars and called for cutting the Pentagon budget, among other issues.

If the horrors of the war in Ukraine and the undeniable danger posed by the two nuclear superpowers vying for supremacy moves you to take a stand, JOIN US: Every Friday 5 to 6pm, 4th and San Fernando Streets, San Jose
