The San Jose Peace and Justice Center commends the temporary ruling by Federal Judge Eumi Lee concerning the proposed ICE facility in Gilroy and we anticipate a further, permanent, ruling next week.
The Peace and Justice Center also thanks County Counsel Tony LoPresti for bringing this lawsuit and the many local politicians who supported the suit.
Finally, we thank our friends and comrades who have demonstrated in Gilroy and all around the county in opposition to the ICE facility.
The lawsuit concentrates on the environmental impact of such a facility. We believe that the real impact is political. The proposed facility, designed to hold up to 100 detainees, is actually part of the Trump administration’s coordinated attack on immigrants and progressive forces all around the nation.
We know that other, currently operating, detention facilities have deplorable conditions leading to illness and even death for those who have been detained.
Now is the time for all people to stand up in opposition to these unconstitutional actions. Stop the ICE Jail! Stop Trump! End all illegal detentions.
The San Jose Peace and Justice Center is the oldest peace center west of the Mississippi and has been in San Jose since 1957. We will celebrate our 69th anniversary on September 19th and 20th and we invite everyone to the celebration!
